With Internet Explorer 9 they are focusing on speed, compatibility and platform integration.
- The speed part is hardware video acceleration and graphics acceleration. What better way to differentiate your OS that runs a browser (which everything will basically become) than with pure speed, speed is easy to show off and wow the masses.
- Compatibility is through better support of HTML 5, in the new Firefox/WebKit world IE is getting stomped, they have no choice but to catch up.
- Integration to the platform is by making links to web pages act more like applications on Windows 7.
As people move more and more to web based "apps", I can see this as a very good strategy going forward. I am not a big Microsoft guy but I have to hand it to them with this one, they are finally looking forward.
